Food For Kids Peterborough and County is a non-profit community partnership in Peterborough County and City. We are committed to improving child nutrition, well-being, and learning capacity through the provision of healthy and vital student nutrition programs, in every school, for every student in our area.
Since the start-up of our first breakfast programs in 1992-93, at two Peterborough schools, our partnership has successfully grown in numbers of school programs, and participating students, volunteers, and sponsors. Last year, Peterborough Food for Kids served over one and a half million breakfasts and snacks to as many as 8,700 students in 45 breakfast clubs in the City and County of Peterborough. Thirty-three of these programs were at elementary schools, and 12 at secondary schools. Our participating schools are listed below.
The Peterborough community, parents, Ministry of Children and Youth, Breakfast For Learning, and Breakfast Clubs of Canada support school nutrition programs. Due to the considerable and generous sponsorships, food donations and discounts afforded Food for Kids Peterborough and County, it costs an average of only 25 cents per student breakfast in our community.
In addition to the tremendous contributions of school staff, parents, student councils and individual donors, our programs enjoy the support of over 100 local community partners, and 900 volunteers. We are grateful to our many partners and supporters, for their help and donations of food, supplies, funding, space, and volunteered time.
SYSCO DONATES TO FOOD FOR KIDS
Sysco Central Ontario, Inc recently presented Food For Kids Peterborough and County with a cheque for $11,500, for the benefit of local school and snack programs.

Sysco employees, Cathy Basciano, Tanya D’Addazio, and Sandy Garvey, presented the donation at Sysco’s Peterborough office, to Food for Kids representatives, Kristine Roberts and Chris McCarthy, and shared highlights of Sysco employee’s successful fundraising efforts over the past year.
“Monthly, each Sysco department takes a turn at organizing a fundraiser, and the donations made by our employees are matched by Sysco Central Ontario, Inc management,” explained Sandy Garvey. “This year, a silent auction, Friday ice cream treats, car washes, cash draws, Havelock Jamboree tickets, and tickets to Maple Leafs-Senators hockey game were very successful. Our big draw for a 40 inch plasma TV, a signed Raptors jersey from centre player Andrea Bargnani, an iPod, and a digital frame made for exciting Christmas gifts,” added Ms. Basciano and Ms. D’Addazio.
Sysco Central Ontario, Inc has been a dedicated and long-standing supporter of Food For Kids school breakfast programs. Sysco employees have volunteered at area breakfast clubs, served on the Food For Kids Steering Committee, and their generous donations over the past 14 years have benefitted thousands of children and youth throughout the city and county. What a remarkable partnership!
Recipe for Success at Immaculate Conception Elementary
The Food For Kids breakfast program at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough, received a generous boost from parent volunteer, Liz Michielsen-Mayes and her employer, the Royal Bank of Canada. Mrs. Michielsen-Mayes volunteers regularly at her son's school breakfast club program, which provides healthy foods each morning to hungry students, so that they can attend classes ready to learn. Her volunteer efforts at the school last year were recognized by her employer, the RBC, through an RBC Employee Community Service grant. Mrs. Michielsen-Mayes recently presented the $500 cheque to Immaculate Conception Elementary School's student nutrition program.

[“RBC is passionate about helping our communities. In fact, giving back to the community is a primary focus and we are happy at RBC to support local organizations. As an employee of RBC and a volunteer, I am happy to present to the Food For Kids breakfast program at Immaculate Conception, a cheque for $500.
I became involved about a year and a half ago, when my son transferred midway school year to Immaculate Conception, in grade 6. The school mentioned there was a breakfast program and in the beginning, my son went there as he was too shy to go out in the yard. But as time went on, he met many new friends. I thought since he was using the program, I would take the opportunity to give back and be a volunteer. Even though we feed many empty bellies each morning, I have noticed that the children enjoy the social aspect, share the experience of the evening, or just come to make a new friend. I have seen many smiles on the cold mornings when we are there, and have enjoyed many conversations, and a few smiles as many of our children come back for seconds and thirds, especially for strawberries and other tasty fruits of the season. Now my son looks forward to coming with me when I volunteer at the breakfast program.
It has been a great experience, and as a former student of Immaculate Conception, I am happy that RBC is contributing to this program, and that every child at Immaculate Conception will have the opportunity to start their day with a full belly. This is a great program for all our employees to be involved in, and RBC will offer a volunteer grant to any staff member or pensioner of RBC who contributes 40 hours or more a year. Thank you RBC!
The Volunteers Who Keep on Giving!
On Wednesday, April 13th the volunteers of the Kawartha Bingo Sponsor's Association celebrated National Volunteer Week by holding a Charity Night at Kawartha Club Bingo. 158 people representing 26 member organizations had buckets of fun laughing, joking, playing bingo, and bidding on wonderful items in the silent auction.
All of the money raised from the auction went to the Food For Kids Peterborough and County Student Nutrition Programs. A cheque for $1274 was presented to Kris Roberts and Chris McCarthy, which will provide for over 5000 meals for the kids. WOW!
Even when the volunteers are having a fun evening, they continue to think of others in our community.
